Music Director Search

April 30, 2019: Union Baptist Church (ABCUSA) of Mystic CT seeks a part-time Music Director to direct multiple vocal and handbell choirs and lead in weekly rehearsal and worship. The purpose of the position:

To organize and direct the following choirs:

  • Chancel Choir
  • Youth Choir
  • Concert Bells
  • Bell Ensemble
  • Praise Bells (when possible)

To coordinate and communicate the administrative and organizational demands of the music program with the clergy, accompanist, and the Music Team, which is part of the larger Worship Team.


  1. College Degree in Music or equivalent experience
  2. Vocal background
  3. Basic piano skills
  4. Experience directing multi-aged vocal and handbell choirs
  5. Basic experience with Musical Theatre
  6. Basic Computer skills
  7. Communication and work skills with a wide range of people and talents


  • Recruit, train and rehearse all choirs:
  1. Chancel Choir
  2. Youth Choir
  3. Concert Bells
  4. Bell Ensemble
  5. Praise Bells (if operating)
  • Participate in area ecumenical musical activities whenever appropriate
  • Team Plan worship services with the clergy and organist
  1. Organize schedule for choir participation in services
  2. Communicate and organize information for commitments outside of the worship services 
  3. Schedule and recruit Special Music for the summer months as well as during the school year (if needed)
  4. organize and schedule hymns for the summer hymn sings
  5. Attend required staff meetings
  6. Attend Council meetings as an ex-officio member, especially when the music matters are discussed and the music director needs to be present.
  • The music director will arrange substitutes in his/her absence and will consult with the organist when a sub is needed for that position.
  • Keep the organist updated, include his/her/ expertise when appropriate
  • Meet with the Music Team on a bi-monthly basis, or more frequently if necessary
  • Minutes from the Music Team meetings to be sent to the clerk
  • Research and order music and supporting materials and accessories as needed
  • Organize and maintain the music library


The Music Director works under the direct supervision of the Senior Minister.

Professional Development:

The Music Director will be encouraged to participate in Professional Development. Monies will be made available from the Music Budget with the Music Team’s backing.


  • Music Director may use the building for private teaching or recitals 
  • Office Space/computer access
