Job Description
About us: Union Baptist Church, an American Baptist Church, located in the picturesque town of Mystic, CT, welcomes everyone without any bias. Ours is a friendly and active community with strengths in Christian Education, Music, and community engagement, with many outlets for all ages. Our Organist works with the Music Director to provide inspiring music to enhance the spiritual life of our services and our church. Organ is a 3-manual digital Wicks, dedicated in 2010. Piano is a 6 ft. Steinway Grand.
UBC Service and Rehearsal schedule:
Services: One service each week at 10:30am (mid-Sept through mid-June) and 9:30am (the week following mid-June through mid-Sept); Special Services include Maundy Thursday, Easter, Christmas, and others added for special events.
Typical Service Music: (3-5) Hymns, Prelude, Offertory, Choir anthem and/or special music, Postlude, Gloria, Doxology. Sometimes instrumentalists may be involved in service music. This will be organized by the Music Director.
Communion Services: (1st week of each month) Add communion travel music. Length of the music will need to be adjusted to fit the service needs.
Choir Rehearsals: Chancel Choir, Thursday at 7:30pm-8:30pm & Sunday at 9:45am, with the service to start at 10:30am Thursday evening rehearsals typically begin in August and end in May, while Sunday morning rehearsals begin mid-September and end mid-June. The Organist will accompany the Chancel Choir on organ or piano. Additional time will be needed for hybrid rehearsals with Chancel Choir and Concert Bells for special services.
Special Music: Frequent solos require accompaniment and joint practice time. This is a regular part of our summer music program. The Organist will schedule any soloist rehearsals on their own time, coordinating with the Music Director and the Church Secretary as necessary.
Supervision: The Organist shall be under the direct supervision of the Music Director and the Senior Minister.
Other Responsibilities:
- The Organist will endeavor to provide constructive suggestions and support to the Music Director and Senior Minister in planning music for worship services.
- The Organist will keep abreast of current music and will make appropriate recommendations to the Music Director and the Senior Minister for incorporating a variety of music into the church music ministry.
- In cooperation with the Music Director, the Organist will secure a suitable substitute during his or her absences.
- The Organist will be given first refusal to play all weddings and funerals. Only if they choose not to play those services, permission is given to substitute another organist without imposition of a bench fee.
- The Organist will oversee any maintenance needs of the pianos and organ.
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of professional study at the organ and significant ability to sight read at both the organ and piano.
- Willingness to include a variety of styles and genres of music.
- Membership in the American Guild of Organists preferred.
- Open to supporting the growth of the Music program.
This is a part-time, approximately 10hr/week position. Salary range $14,000-20,000 commensurate with experience and skill. Benefits include vacation and sick leave.
